Copra Meal
Indications
Coconut meal or Copra meal is a by product of the ripe fruit (nut) of the Coconut Palm.
This nut is split and the kernel is removed and dried below 6% moisture. This is then called Copra Meal but it still contains oil. After pressing or extracting oil the remaining residue is called Coconut meal.

Directions for use
Use as directed by your Consultant Nutritionist.
High levels of Copra meal should not be suddenly included into the diets of pigs and poultry (even if the diet is nutritionally sound). Introduce Copra meal into the diet slowly over time. This will overcome the initial reluctance by stock to eating Copra meal
Copra meal can be used in diets for pigs (except creep diets) poultry, cattle (Dairy and Beef) and horses of all ages. Contains less than 2% starch so does not cause starch related disorders such as trying up and laminitis.
Ideal for introducing stock to supplementary feeding and can be used strategically to supplement pasture for higher milk production or growing or fattening stock.
Can be mixed in a finished feed, or silage, to raise protein and energy to make a complete feed.
Suggested inclusion levels as follows:
Creep diets nil
Pig diets other up to 10%
Poultry diets up to 5%
Cattle diets up to 10%
Equine and Sheep diets up to 10%
Discussion
Copra Meal is a highly digestible supplement with moderately high protein and energy values, with its energy being derived from its relatively high oil and fibre content and no carbohydrate it is a very safe product to feed to ruminants.
Care is needed when feeding copra meal to livestock, to ensure that it is not rancid, as this will cause diarrhoea. Rancidity usually develops as a result of the meal being stored for too long under unfavourable conditions such as high temperature.
