PIGDEX™ PLUS VITAMIN B 12
Indications
For the prevention or treatment of piglet anaemia.
Composition
100 mg / ml iron (as iron dextran complex),
75 ug / ml Cyanocobalamin vitamin B12.

Caution – avoid carcass damage
1. Sterilise all injection apparatus by boiling before use.
Avoid the use of strong disinfectants on apparatus.
2. Maintain cleanliness at all times.
3. Keep needles sharp and clean. Replace frequently.
4. Use needles of appropriate gauge and length.
5. As far as possible avoid injection of animals during wet weather or under
dusty conditions.
6. This product must be injected only into muscle tissue.
If possible inject into muscle tissue on side of neck.
If neck muscle is insufficient to absorb dose volume, the injection may be
made into the muscles of the hind leg.
7. Insert needle approximately 1cm directly into muscles at the injection site.
8. This product is not to be administered to piglets after first four weeks
of life.
DOSAGE RECOMMENDATIONS
Prevention
2 ml per pig 2 to 4 days of age.
Treatment
2 ml per pig at any time up to 21 days of age.
Discussion
“Piglet anaemia” is a term commonly applied to iron deficiency anaemia of piglets. Newborn piglets are usually born with sufficient haemoglobin, but limited body reserves of iron.
The following factors rapidly lead to piglet anaemia in modern piggeries:
The low level of iron in sow’s milk.
The inability of the sow to increase this iron concentration even with parenteral or oral supplementation.
The rapidly increasing plasma volume of the fast growing piglet (increased need for iron).
The lack of environmental iron for the intensively reared piglet.
In some cases, a 1 ml dose of PIGDEX™ PLUS VITAMIN B12 may be sufficient to prevent piglet anaemia when administered during the first 3 to 10 days of age; however, in most situations 2 ml should be given. If in doubt seek veterinary advice.
