Rhodimetâ„¢ AT88

Indications

An essential sulphur containing amino acid required for the proper growth, reproduction and health of monogastric animals. For use in the manufacture of stock feeds.

Composition

DL-2-hydroxy-4-methyl-thio-butanoic acid (hydroxy-analogue of methionine), minimum 88% of which the monomer is 65% minimum (liquid).

Directions

Refer to the printout from the BEC FEED FORMULATION GUIDE for exact usage. The level of RHODIMETâ„¢ AT 88 required will vary from diet to diet and depends greatly upon the raw materials used in the diet.

Discussion

RHODIMETâ„¢ AT 88 is a feed grade form of dl-2-hydroxy-4-methyl-thio-butanoic acid, a hydroxy-analogue of the essential amino acid, methionine. It is a concentrated liquid source of methionine that is especially suitable for use in large feed plants that add methionine directly to their feed product.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein in the body of animals. Methionine is an essential amino acid for pigs and poultry. This means that it must be present in the diet as the animals are not able to manufacture methionine themselves. If methionine is deficient in the diet then production will be greatly compromised.

In pig diets, methionine must be present in balanced quantities to ensure that protein production and hence meat production is maximised. If insufficient methionine is available in a pig diet then protein synthesis will stop until methionine is available. Meat production stops and any other amino acids which would otherwise be used in the production of meat are used as an energy source, this results in the formation of fat instead of muscle (meat). Apart from the undesirable increase in carcass fat, this process is very inefficient as expensive dietary proteins are utilised to form excess depot fats in the body. In severe cases this can be measured as an increase in the "P2" fat level of the carcass.

Methionine is usually the first limiting amino acid in poultry diets. This means that if a broiler, chick, pullet or layer diet is deficient in methionine, production or growth will be affected immediately. Deficiencies may result in poor feathering, reduced growth and poorer feed conversion efficiency.

Often methionine may only be marginally deficient in a diet. As reduced production efficiency can result from many causes, it may be difficult to diagnose the problems as a methionine deficiency. None the less the cost to the producer is real, for this reason diets should always be computer formulated by an experienced and skilled nutritionist to take into account the balance of methionine to the other nutrients in the diet.
